Luke Martineau b.1970
Luke discovered a passion for painting en plein air
at a young age. After graduating from Oxford, he estab -
lished himself as a professional artist in London. He has
since enjoyed many successful solo exhibitions with
Panter & Hall in Pall Mall. In 2010 Luke was invited
to join TRHs The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of
Cornwall as their official tour artist in India. Highlights
of recent years include a painting of Queen Elizabeth II
on a visit to Eton College and a full-length portrait of
the Lord Mayor of London.
‘ I have painted on Exmoor since I was a teenager and
while Exmoor cannot truly be described as a wilder ness,
it has wild elements, and a wonderful mixture of terrain
and moods. I love painting up on the moor with birds,
cattle and ponies for company, and where there is mar vel -
lous sense of freedom under the wide arc of the sky. But
I am also drawn to the sparkle of the river and pro tec tive
beech woods which surround it. The water in the river
Barle is very cold, even in August. My painting was done
at a popular bathing spot, a bend in the river known as
’
Hind’s Pit, where the water runs deep and slow.
